WIllow, our Red-tailed black cockatoo’s enclosure has had a renovation, and we think she loves it!
Just recently, our Cairns ZOOM Wildlife Keepers had noticed that Willow had laid an egg on the ground instead of in her usual place on a tree branch. Around the time this happened, our Wildlife Trainees who are studying a certificate in captive animals, had to undertake a unit on providing enrichment for animals. To give Willow something a little nicer to lay her future eggs on, and to provide an environment for our Wildlife Trainees to complete their units, we decided to do them together! Careers Training Centre and our trainees ended up finding a large log that was previously used within the ZOOM course, and decided it would be perfect to use within the cockatoo enclosure!
After a little bit of cleaning, the log was moved into the cockatoo enclosure and was filled with stuff to make it a comfier for Willow. Now that the project is complete, our team at Cairns ZOOM are monitoring Willow’s behaviour towards the log and will make changes if necessary. If you think you would be interested in undertaking a captive animals certificate, contact the team at Careers Training Centre. Below are some photos of the project
